The chemicals in synthetic smoking products were incredibly powerful which caused
tolerance to build quickly and addiction to follow.
Natural smoking

On 8 May 2014 the Psychoactive Substances Amendment Act
(the Amendment Act) came into force in New Zealand. This gave effect to the
Government’s decision to introduce legislation ending interim product
approvals under the Psychoactive Substances Act.
The legislation revoked all interim product approvals and all interim
retail and wholesale licences with immediate effect.
Under section 88
of the Psychoactive Substances Act the Authority issued an urgent
recall of all products that had interim product approval.
This caused the
synthetics industry to crumble rapidly, leaving thousands of synthetic smokers out in the cold, miserable, and unhappy.
This withdrawal period can be awful, but there is a light at the end of
the tunnel.
First, let’s remember what made synthetic cannabis kick so hard, Research Chemicals.
The first wave of research chemicals most commonly
found in synthetic products was JWH-018, an analog of T.H.C the psychoactive
chemical in marijuana. JWH018, and it’s successors, is approximately
100 times more potent than T.H.C. This is REAL BAD!
Heavy cannabis smokers will inevitably develop a tolerance, requiring that they smoke more marijuana to achieve the desired state or find some way to potentiate what’s available.
In response to this, the human brain will begin to adapt, & habituate to the presence of the cannabinoids. The brain changes itself to be able to deal with the invading chemicals.
For T.H.C, it changes a little over time. For chemicals like JWH018, it changes quite a bit more and more quickly. If JWH018 is 100x more potent than regular old T.H.C, just imagine what your brain had to do to be able to deal with a chemical that intense.
This is one of the reasons why synthetic cannabinoids were so popular, both as a recreational drug, but also for intense pain relief.
It’s also what makes them very, very addictive. Once your brain gets used to the abundant chemicals, be it T.H.C or JWH018, it assumes the stuff will just keep coming.
When it doesn’t, the changes the brain made to itself to adapt come crashing down and the smoker suffers nasty withdrawals. This is true for alcoholism and every other kind of drug abuse. This is the physical basis for addiction and withdrawal.
T.H.C can be addictive to some if used heavily. Synthetic research chemical cannabinoids are very addictive, period.
They’re simply too potent and act too directly on the brain.
Now that synthetics are illegal, former smokers are struggling to find something, anything to take the edge off.
Synthetics withdrawal sucks, but you’ve gotta ride it out!
For many, it isn’t about getting 'high' – it’s about feeling better, reaching baseline, or diminishing severe pain.
Because synthetics were so devastatingly powerful, those addicted cannot find immediate relief from anything available, including marijuana (still illegal in N.Z without a prescription) and modern, all natural smoking blends.
We often hear from former synthetics users who report that once they began smoking synthetics, nothing else had an effect.
